Indie developer Serenity (Serenity Theater) has turned a legendary 2000s console into a functional VTuber rig. Using open-source PS2SDK libraries, Serenity rendered a moving 3D avatar natively on a PlayStation 2 hooked up to a vintage CRT television—completely emulation-free.
While modern VTubing relies on high-end PCs and tracking software, this prototype uses a PC Python script to calculate face tracking data before sending it to the PS2 over a network per frame. The console’s iconic Emotion Engine CPU handles all the 3D rendering in real time. Responding to skepticism, Serenity emphasized, "No tricks! No emulation! No imitation!"
Currently, the setup outputs a clean avatar feed for streaming tools like OBS, but the roadmap goes much further. Serenity plans to expand it into full animation software, add DIY body tracking, and even experiment with face tracking using the classic PS2 EyeToy camera. When asked if this could eventually run inside an actual PS2 game, Serenity teased, "Emphasis on 'for now.'"
