Research Confirms Cats Recognized Owner Voices But Ignore Them

If you have ever felt like your pet feline was actively ignoring your calls, science has officially proven that you are not just imagining it!

A fascinating 2013 scientific study published in the peer reviewed journal Animal Cognition revealed that domestic cats possess the distinct cognitive ability to clearly differentiate their owners voice from the voices of total strangers.

During the controlled behavioral experiments, researchers observed that when cats heard their names called out, many displayed subtle physical reactions such as twitching their ears, swiveling their heads toward the sound source, or widening their eyes.

Notably, these physical movements were significantly more pronounced and frequent when the voice belonged to their primary human caregiver rather than an unfamiliar person.

So, while your independent companion recognizes your voice perfectly well and understands you are communicating with them, do not necessarily expect them to drop everything and come running over to greet you.

In many cases, that tiny, nonchalant ear twitch or brief tilt of the head is the absolute maximum response they feel like giving you.
