A shocking wildlife smuggling attempt was thwarted at Tokyo Haneda Airport after Japanese customs officers made an incredible discovery inside a travelers luggage!
A 23 year old Mexican national was officially arrested after authorities discovered approximately 200 live reptiles stuffed inside 22 pairs of rolled up socks packed tightly within his personal suitcase.
The traveler had arrived in Japan following a flight from South Korea and allegedly attempted to clear customs without obtaining any of the legally required permits or documentation for importing exotic fauna.
Among the confiscated animals were nine rare Mexican alligator lizards a vulnerable species whose international commercial trade is strictly regulated and restricted under CITES international protection agreements.
Tragically inspectors confirmed that one of the delicate lizards had already perished inside the luggage due to the severe transport conditions before the suitcase was unzipped.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect reportedly bought the animals throughout Mexico and was allegedly planning to sell them for substantial profit within Japan’s lucrative exotic pet trade market. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the broader smuggling network to prevent further illegal wildlife trafficking.
