On May 17, 2026, legendary Nepali guide Kami Rita Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest for a record-breaking 32nd time at 10:12 AM local time. His achievement further extends his own world record, widening the gap over his closest rival, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, who holds 29 summits.
Hailing from Thame—the hometown of pioneer Tenzing Norgay—Kami Rita first summited Everest in 1994 and has returned nearly every year since, occasionally scaling it twice in a single season. His impressive career includes over 40 ascents of 8,000-meter peaks, including K2, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Manaslu.
At 56, Kami Rita admits he would prefer retirement, but continues to climb to support the international mountaineers who specifically request his guidance through the deadly terrain.
