Unstoppable Genius: Hayao Miyazaki Is Still Creating Brand New Studio Ghibli Art at 85
Hayao Miyazaki simply does not know how to stop creating. Despite countless "retirement" announcements over the decades, the legendary 85-year-old Studio Ghibli director is still actively producing brand-new artwork, proving that his artistic fire burns as bright as ever.
The touching revelation came directly from his son, Goro Miyazaki, during a press preview for Ghibli Park’s brand-new Panorama Box Exhibition. Goro jokingly admitted that a small part of him sometimes thinks, "Come on, enough already," before warmly confessing that he ultimately wants his father to keep creating art for the rest of his life.
According to Goro, the iconic director is still sitting at his desk producing fresh illustrations today. In fact, Miyazaki’s newest pieces are the literal centerpiece of the park's latest attraction, which officially opened to the public on July 8, 2026. Goro described the new drawings as being so full of life and energy that they practically spill beyond the borders of the displays, turning into panorama boxes without frames.
A Journey Through 31 Handcrafted Masterpieces
The stunning new exhibition features 31 handcrafted panorama boxes that took a dedicated team three years to carefully construct. By using intricately layered physical illustrations, the displays build breathtaking, three-dimensional scenes that visitors can peer into.
The works celebrate and revisit legendary moments from Miyazaki’s iconic filmography, including:
- NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind
- Kiki’s Delivery Service
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- The Boy and the Heron
A Treat for Die-Hard Fans: In addition to paying tribute to his famous movies, the exhibition also includes completely original concepts and visual ideas drawn by Miyazaki that have never appeared in any of his finished feature films.
Connecting Generations & A Surprise "Kiki" Adaptation
Goro Miyazaki expressed hope that the physical exhibition will help younger, modern visitors discover older Studio Ghibli masterpieces that children today might be less familiar with.
The studio's legendary catalog is also getting a massive modern spotlight elsewhere. In a surprise industry move, BBC Studios, Wheel in Motion, and Kadokawa recently announced they are teaming up to produce a brand-new, 10-episode live-action television series based on Eiko Kadono’s original Kiki’s Delivery Service novel.
Between groundbreaking live-action adaptations and Miyazaki himself still putting ink to paper at 85, the magical world of Studio Ghibli is as vibrant and relevant as it has ever been.
