Stunning "Blood-Red" Sky Over NYC is a Spectacular Scientific Phenomenon, Not an Omen
An eerie, blood-red sky illuminated the New York City skyline during America's 250th anniversary celebration, leading many online to superstitiously brand the apocalyptic sight as a "bad omen."
In reality, the dramatic twilight was a harmless atmospheric event. A powerful summer thunderstorm had swept through the metropolitan area, clearing up right before the 8:31 PM sunset. The low-angle sunlight struck lingering moisture in the air and filtered through heavy smoke left behind by Macy's massive 85,000-shell fireworks display. This filtered out shorter blue wavelengths of light, leaving behind deep crimson, orange, and pink tones.
The spectacular, fiery glow spread across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, lighting up landmarks like the Empire State Building and providing a memorable, breathtaking backdrop to the country’s quarter-millennium.
