Steve Fugate: Walking 50,000 Miles to Mend Broken Hearts

While hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1999, Steve Fugate learned his son had tragically died by suicide. After grieving, he returned to the trail carrying a sign reading "LOVE LIFE." Years later, he lost his daughter as well, but he chose to keep moving forward.

Now in his late 70s, the Florida native has walked across the United States nine times, covering nearly 50,000 miles. He describes his lifelong mission as "mending the broken heart while it is yet beating." Along his journey, the immense kindness of strangers—who frequently feed him, wash his clothes, and repair his cart—keeps him inspired to spread hope.
