“Oh Boy, Was I Wrong About Her” Premieres: A Childhood Friend Reunion With a Huge Twist!

The summer anime lineup just got a major dose of cozy, slow-burn energy with a premiere that flips a classic trope completely on its head.

Based on Yu Hibari's popular light novel series and brought to life by the romance genre veterans at studio Project No.9, Oh Boy, Was I Wrong About Her officially dropped its highly anticipated first episode on Crunchyroll this week.

The Ultimate Childhood Friend Plot Twist

The story kicks off with our main protagonist, Hayato Kirishima, making the big move from his quiet countryside hometown to a bustling city high school. Expecting to navigate the typical struggles of being the new transfer student, Hayato is completely caught off guard when he crosses paths with Haruki—his old childhood best friend whom he hasn't seen in seven long years.

But here is the catch: growing up, Haruki was a total, rough-and-tumble tomboy. Hayato spent his entire childhood completely convinced that Haruki was a boy. Upon their emotional high school reunion, he is hit with the ultimate reality check: Haruki has actually been a girl this entire time, and she has grown into an absolute school beauty.

While her appearance might have undergone a stunning transformation, the second the two are left alone, she flashes the exact same familiar, playful smile that Hayato remembers from years ago.

A Romance That Actually Lets Its Characters Breathe

Slated for a total of 12 episodes releasing on a weekly schedule, early impressions are already praising the series for its deliberate pacing. Instead of rushing headfirst into a forced high school romance, director Chuanfeng Xu and script overseer Deko Akao are deliberately giving Hayato and Haruki's core friendship room to re-establish itself first.

Adding to the charm is a surprisingly grounded subplot involving Hayato’s family dynamic, which promises to give the series some genuine emotional weight beyond the standard, superficial romcom formulas we see every season.

Over to You!

For fans who live for gentle, nostalgic romance stories with a touch of clever humor, this premiere is shaping up to be a standout comfort watch for the summer.
