Is This Fall's Most Controversial Romance? 'My Girlfriend's Friend' Anime Locks In October Release
A massive storm of high school relationship drama is officially brewing for the fall anime season.
The highly anticipated television anime adaptation of Jura’s smash-hit manga My Girlfriend's Friend (known in Japan as Kanojo no Tomodachi) has locked in its highly anticipated October premiere date. Alongside the release window announcement, the production team dropped a tantalizing new teaser trailer and a sleek second key visual to get fans buzzing.
The Creative Team Behind the Drama
The adaptation is being animated by Studio Quad, the exact same studio that turned heads with My Life as Inukai-san's Dog. Directing the project is Takashi Ando, with Goko Shiraki supervising the intense series scripts, and Ryuji Iwata handling the sleek character designs.
Interestingly, the project is being produced under WWWave Corporation’s specialized Deregula label—an imprint created explicitly to bring mature, edge-pushing manga from other publishers directly into the anime spotlight.
A Webb of Lies: What is the Story About?
The story follows Takeru, a seemingly ordinary high school student aiming for medical school, who finally starts dating his sweet classmate, Kaori, after she confesses her deep feelings to him. However, their perfect, harmonious relationship faces an immediate threat when Kaori’s seductive best friend, Tomoko, ruthlessly inserts herself into the picture.
Caught between a desperate sense of loyalty to his girlfriend and Tomoko’s aggressive, tempting advances, Takeru falls into a double life that risks throwing his entire future into absolute chaos.
A Massive Foundation of Manga Success
Since its initial launch on Kodansha's YanMaga Web service back in 2021, the source material has built a fiercely dedicated—and incredibly vocal—global following. The manga's debut volume was so wildly popular that it required an immediate emergency reprint, and the franchise comfortably surpassed a whopping 800,000 copies in circulation.
With a battle-tested creative team at the helm and a massive wave of built-in fan curiosity, this adaptation has all the ingredients to be one of the most talked-about, drama-heavy fantasy series of the entire year.
