Is the Superhero Era Over? Studio Head Claims Gen Z Has Left the Genre Behind

A Hollywood studio head has claimed that Gen Z has lost interest in superhero films, suggesting the genre now "belongs" to millennials. The comment follows the poor box office performance of DC's Supergirl. Starring Milly Alcock, the $170M–$180M film opened to just $37.1 million—falling below the disappointing debut of Joker: Folie à Deux.

According to a Hollywood Reporter analysis, the executive noted that younger audiences lack the nostalgia of millennials, who grew up during the peak Marvel and DC eras. The film's stumble has ignited debates over whether the failure stems from casting, direction, or a broader case of superhero fatigue.

While past blockbusters like Avengers: Infinity War once easily drew in all demographics, this latest flop suggests a shifting tide in audience tastes. It leaves many wondering if the genre is experiencing a temporary slump or a permanent generational decline.
