When Andy Serkis was cast as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings in 1999, he was only hired to provide the character's voice. However, director Peter Jackson and the VFX team were blown away by his intense physical performance on set, realizing the CGI creature had to mirror his every movement and facial expression.
That pivotal moment revolutionized visual effects, establishing the groundwork for modern motion capture. Serkis went on to define the medium with legendary roles like Caesar in Planet of the Apes, King Kong, and Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars.
Now 62, the pioneer continues to lead the field as both actor and director, taking the helm for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (releasing December 2027). He remains the undisputed pioneer of performance capture.
