Argentina Players Spark Controversy with Falklands Banner After Defeating England
Following their dramatic 2-1 World Cup semifinal victory over England in Atlanta, Argentina players—including Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso—celebrated by holding up a fan-provided banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" (The Falklands are Argentine).
The political display could trigger disciplinary action from FIFA, which strictly prohibits political banners, flags, and symbols inside tournament venues. Argentina was previously fined 30,000 Swiss francs in 2014 for a similar pre-match demonstration.
While Britain has administered the Falkland Islands since 1833—and islanders voted 99.8% in 2013 to remain a British Overseas Territory—Argentina continues to claim sovereignty, making the team's on-pitch victory celebration highly contentious.
