Akon City has officially been canceled after years of delays and funding failures. Senegal's tourism agency, SAPCO, terminated the contract with the singer, reclaiming most of the 136-acre site after construction failed to progress beyond a single, unfinished welcome center.
First announced in 2018, Akon envisioned a futuristic $6 billion "Wakanda" featuring curved skyscrapers, luxury hotels, solar power, and its own cryptocurrency, Akoin. However, the crypto token crashed, legal issues arose, and the promised multi-billion-dollar funding never materialized, leaving the land undeveloped.
After Akon missed strict government deadlines, authorities seized full control of the property. Senegal is now backing a practical $1 billion luxury tourism resort featuring hotels, apartments, and a marina to revitalize the area.
