An incredibly preserved praying mantis encased in amber dating back to the Oligocene epoch—roughly 30 million years ago—continues to captivate researchers. Trapped in the sticky resin of the extinct Hymenaea protera tree in the Dominican Republic, the prehistoric insect remains frozen in time with extraordinary clarity.
Because the amber completely shielded the organism from moisture and decay, its finest anatomical details are still visible today. The specimen showcases how prehistoric mantises share striking physical similarities with modern species. Reflecting both its immense scientific value and rarity, this unique fossilized insect was eventually sold through Heritage Auctions for approximately $6,000.
